About this map: Appreciation of the spectacular and beautiful scenery of the Hermitage of Braid and Blackford Hill Park is enhanced by knowing about the underlying geology, which is directly reflected in the landscape. This map is based on out-of-print leaflet produced by the Edinburgh Geological Society, and is published online by Lothian and Borders Geoconservation. This is an experiment in making information available, and the map is still being worked on!

Create a map and submit it to our MapMaker competition for a chance to win £100.
Every fortnight, we will be offering £100 for the best map submitted to MakkaMappa and entered into our regular competition. Put your creativity to good use – make a map for a chance to win £100.
To enter, first submit a map to the MakkaMappa system, calibrate and test it, and add overlay information as appropriate. When you are happy with your map, use the Map Maker Competition box on your map's details page to submit it to the next open competition. You should receive an e-mail from support[at]makkamappa.com confirming that you have entered the competition.
- We'll judge all entries received on three main criteria:
- Functionality. Is the MakkaMappa mapping made between the map and the geographic area it represents accurate and is the information shown on the map and any associated overlays obviously useful?
- Artistry. Does the map successfully exploit MakkaMappa's ability to GPS-enable any map image? Is it a visually striking map?
- Originality. Does the map stand out from existing maps in terms of innovative use of the technology?
Winners will be notified by e-mail within a week of the submission deadline. Winning maps may be highlighted in our Featured Maps section. Full details and rules for the competition series can be found here.
